That's how Thompson Houston's managing director, Ted Knighton, describes the 172-guestoom hotel, which opens today, Valentine's Day. It's true — views from the seventh-floor lobby, and many of the corner-hugging suites, are a love letter to the city's best angles. With the downtown skyline and Buffalo Bayou Park on full, panoramic display, Thompson Houston offers a slice of what Houston has been missing: a boutique-ish hotel experience in a sea of convention-style accommodations.
The Allen Parkway destination is not exactly intimate, or entirely local, though it's close enough. A stone's throw from Autry Park and Regent Square, where Houston's big name restaurateurs behind Berg Hospitality and Underbelly Hospitality are pulling out all the stops at Annabelle's Brasserie and Pastore, respectively, the Thompson Houston has got the prime real estate thing down.

It isn't open yet, but when custom-tiled infinity pool eventually unlocks its gates, the surrounding cabanas will be in high demand. There's no backdrop like it for miles.
The rooftop boasts 2,500-square-feet of green space. This is Texas, so everything is a bit bigger than it ought to be, including some of Thompson Houston's public spaces.
There are casual nods to a midcentury modern aesthetic, with bits of marble here and flashes of brass there. The ballroom can hold up to 500 guests, and Knighton says some 30 weddings and charity galas are already on the books for 2024.
Architecture firm HOK is behind the building's glass-and-steel facade. The exterior is futuristic and stark, with decidedly warmer interiors by Houston based Abel Design Group. All of the Thompson calling cards are accounted for: plush textiles in shades of gray and jewel tones, warm walnut and collages of contemporary art.

Given the choice, check into one of the property's 34 suites. They have floor-to-ceiling windows and jaw-dropping bathrooms. Each one comes with a private home sound system and use of an Honor Bar, too. They're meant to "evoke the spirit of a Texas oil baron's home," according to a statement, though the vibe feels more like a hedge fund guy's pied-à-terre. And that's not a necessarily a bad thing.
Some notable Houstonians have already moved into the Thompson's residential wing. BeDesign swathed its lobby in Fendi Casa to give a more European feel.
The hotel does achieve its "home away from home" goal. Pets are welcome. Heavy use of green effectively brings the park indoors. And as Knighton points out, "This is Houston's first hotel with three perspectives: downtown, River Oaks and Buffalo Bayou."
Facing east, try not to peer down into the neighboring Fourth Ward townhouses.
Once restaurants Sol 7, Chardon and Buck 40 open, there will be no rest — or shortage of Instagram fodder — for the weary. Richard Thompson is known as the 'Waco Drummer.' He goes across the city of Waco playing the drums and showing of the city on social media.
WACO, Texas — If you've traveled through Waco in recent years, chances are you may have seen, or heard, Richard Thompson IV, better known as 'The Waco Drummer'.
"Bringing art and music together is something I'm passionate about," Thompson said.
Thompson has been playing drums since he was five years old. He moved to Waco nearly 15 years ago and has called it home ever since alongside his wife, whom he has been with for around 10 years.
"I met my wife on MySpace of all places, became best friends, made the move here, been here ever since," Thompson said. "I worked almost every job you can think of."
Thompson has also worked at schools across Waco as well, which is how he began street drumming.
"I was at Carver Middle School. I was a behavior specialist, and so they asked me to do a talent show. And when I did that talent show, the kids were screaming and hollering and I love it because I got to see the energy and their enthusiasm," Thompson said.
From there, Thompson began playing outside of a Fuzzy's Taco Shop in Waco and now travels the city playing the drums in various spots giving free concerts.
"He's passionate about what he does, about helping people and drumming and life," said Francisco Montelongo, Thompson's friend of over 10 years. Montelongo said drumming and doing music is Thompson's happy place.
Thompson said he loves showing off the artwork of the city and is passionate about mixing artwork with his music, adding that he wants to show off the City of Waco.
"It's not just Baylor or Magnolia, but it's so much within the community," Thompson said. "We've got murals everywhere, and so just trying to find every mural I can."
In the four years Thompson has been drumming across the city, only once did he skip a beat, after he was involved in a car crash.
"Feb. 9. It was I want to say maybe eight, nine o'clock," said Thompson. "We were involved in that crash when the truck was going 60+, man, and I didn't expect it. We didn't. I mean, he ran the red light."
"It took a toll on him," said Montelongo. "This is how I met him, playing drums and playing music."
Despite the situation, Thompson's passion for drumming never left.
"That, for me, was a pivotal point of 'what are you going to do,'" Thompson said about the crash. But of course, he decided he was going to drum again. "That was my prayer. That was my belief is like, 'No, I don't have this gift just to have it.'"
Thompson says his goal was and always is to inspire.
"The reason I live is, again, to motivate, inspire and empower," Thompson said. "Try to leave a smile on people's faces, man. So if I can do that, I'm doing my job."

“I told them I was really hoping for final approval then because I didn’t want to have any more kids,” he said.
Thompson Realty Capital, in partnership with Trez Capital, is planning the new 50-acre development. This project is a part of Trez Capital’s joint-venture partnership program.
Located at the southeast corner of FM 2499 and Lakeside Village Parkway, the project’s first phase includes a four-story, 200-unit, garden-urban mix, multifamily community and 15,000 square feet of retail with space for three pad sites, as well as a 60,000-square-foot office building.
On full build-out, the development is going to total 500,000 square feet of office space and 30,000 square feet of retail space. The development will roll out over four phases.
Field said this was the longest entitlement process he’s ever been involved in. The tract was owned by Joe Graham of Graham Mortgage, and Thompson Realty Capital worked for him to get the land entitled. The property previously didn’t have any zoning.
Several factors slowed the project down, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a turnover in town leadership. Flower Mound had several opinions on what shape the project should take, as the property acts as a gateway into the town.
“I think that can be good and bad, but at the same time, they know what they want and they have a vision,” he said.
Today, there’s industrial development in the area that serves as the southern gateway into Flower Mound, and city leaders wanted to improve its image in that location. The town had a specific idea of what it wanted, Field said, and while it took a while to make it work it was worth the involved process.
“A lot of people would not dedicate that much time and effort to try and get something done,” he said. “But we really believe in this area.”
The development will include almost 18 acres of parks and open space and about 2.6 miles of trails on site.
Eventually, Flower Mound would like to turn the area into an office corridor and push for class A development, Field said. This could help build on Realty Capital’s expansive Lakeside development. Realty Capital is aiming to deliver several residential high-rise towers within its Lakeside Village development.
Flower Mound is in the heart of North Texas with proximity to the DFW International Airport. The median household income in Flower Mound is almost $140,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
“It has a lot of opportunity for growth and a lot of opportunity for, hopefully, a corporate user to come in and want to be the gateway entry to the town,” Field said.

Tristan Thompson's attempt to have a paternity case against him heard in Houston appears to be Texas toast.
Maralee Nichols, the woman who claimed in a lawsuit filed in a Los Angeles court that the NBA player, Khloe Kardashian's ex, is the father of her newborn son, has won a major victory in their legal battle. On Thursday, Dec. 16, E! News confirmed that a judge ruled to dismiss a parallel paternity lawsuit that the NBA star submitted against Nichols in a court in Houston. This means the case will be likely handled in California.
Us Weekly cited a source as saying that both Thompson and Nichols were present and gave live testimonies at the virtual hearing on Wednesday, Dec. 15. Nichols and Thompson's attorneys had no immediate comment when reached by E! News and documents for the dismissed Texas case remain sealed.
Nichols, who used to live in Texas, and Thompson, have been battling for months over which state should handle the paternity case and he has demanded genetic testing to prove if he is the baby's father.

She also said she believes Thompson "thinks forum shopping in Texas will save him money ultimately in child support."
Thompson stated in a Dec. 16 declaration in response to Nichols' suit in Los Angeles, published by The Daily Mail, "I filed paternity action in Texas because that is the only place where paternity could have taken place."
He added that the two saw each other on a "sporadic basis for consensual casual sex" between December 2020 and March 13, his 30th birthday, during which he and Nichols spent the night in a Houston hotel. He said in his filing, "I am certain that if the child is deemed to be my child that the only date of conception was March 13, 2021, because it was my birthday" and that he and Nichols "did not have sexual intercourse in California" during that timeframe.

In her original filing in Los Angeles, Nichols requested that Thompson pay her "reasonable expenses of pregnancy and birth," adding that he had already covered the cost of two doctor's visits. Her petition to determine parental relationship also states that "the court may make orders for support of the children and issue an earnings assignment without further notice to either party."
Also in her June filing, Nichols requested full legal and physical custody of her son, with Thompson granted visitation rights. In his declaration made in response to her suit, he stated, "In my pleadings, I acknowledged my responsibilities in the event that there is a finding of paternity. However, I have confirmed that if I am found to be the father, that I will not be seeking custody or visitation of the child."
In documents filed in response to Thompson's suit in Texas, Nichols included a copy of what she said was a "text from Tristan" sent to her, which, "Wont [sic] be involved at all. Btw if you think having this baby is gonna make you some money. It's completely wrong. You are aware that I'm retiring after this season. So in terms of support it will be whatever is required monthly for someone who's unemployed. It's texas so it will be only a couple hundred dollars."
He allegedly continued, "So you better off taking this 75k I'm offering cause you won't get nothing near that with having a kid with a father who's unemployed. All you will have is a baby with a father who has zero involvement with the child and a few hundred dollars of child support a month."
In his Dec. 16 declaration for the Los Angeles case, Thompson stated, "[Nichols] has attached to her papers many Snapchat messages which she claims are 'real' and represent 'real' communications between us. However, I strongly contend that these messages have been fabricated by [Nichols]." He did, however, admit that the two used Snapchat as the sole method of communication for the duration of their sexual relationship.
