Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that generally develops early in life. Any curvature to the spine that measures ten degrees or more on an X-ray is classified as scoliosis. The curve(s) are often described using the letters “C” and “S”.
Diagnosis
During most physicals, your provider will check for spine curves by having you bend forward at the waist. If they notice a curve, they may do X-Rays. If the provider feels necessary, they may also request an MRI. This will rule out the possibility of a tumor causing the curve.
Symptoms
Those who have scoliosis may experience:
- A visible curve in the spine
- Shoulders, waist, or hips may look uneven or cause a person to stand with a lean
- One shoulder blade may be larger
- Ribs may stick out farther on one side of the body
- Back pain and stiffness
- Pain and numbness in the legs
- Fatigue due to muscle strain

Types of Scoliosis and Causes
- Congenital scoliosis develops before birth. The vertebrae of the developing spine may not develop fully or do not divide properly. Depending on the severity of this condition, doctors might find it at birth, or it may not be noticeable until later on in life.
- Degenerative scoliosis occurs with age as the discs and joints begin to wear out.
- Idiopathic scoliosis Nearly 80% of scoliosis cases are idiopathic, meaning without a known cause.
- Neuromuscular scoliosis usually occurs in conditions like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or spinal cord injuries. These conditions can damage the muscles to the point where they do not support the spine correctly. Over time this can cause a curvature to develop in the spine.
