GARLAND — The Cinco Ranch volleyball team has experienced its share of first-set losses this season, including both Region III-6A tournament matches.
It has yet to stop the Cougars, who will play for the UIL Class 6A state championship after a 20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 semifinal victory against San Antonio Harlan Friday at the Culwell Center.
"We've struggled a bit with first sets," Cinco Ranch coach Danielle Wells said. "I don't know what it is, but it's like we have to find our groove and then we get into it. Hopefully we can maybe not do that tomorrow. First set has always been a little bit harder for us but we're still trying improve on that."

Cinco Ranch (38-5) has never played in a final, including its 2009 state tournament appearance. The Cougars will get that chance against Grand Oaks at 5 p.m. Saturday.
"We're definitely hungry," Cinco Ranch senior Makenna Loo said. "During the tournament in August, to play within two to a team that's ranked No. 1 in the state. We're just hungry for it. We know they're beatable and we want to be the team to beat them."
Harlan (44-6) used a 5-0 run to pull ahead in the first set, leading 9-5 before Cinco Ranch clawed back. A kill by setter Kassie O'Brien pulled the Cougars within 17-16, but they could not get even.
Cinco Ranch had to work to maintain the lead in set two but held on to tie the match. The Cougars trailed briefly but had a 14-10 lead after hitting errors by Harlan and strong attacks by Gabi Martinez.
Each time the Hawks pulled within one, Cinco Ranch had an answer. Loo and Martinez had late kills to preserve the lead.

"We just knew we had to play for each other, play together and just push through," Martinez said.
The Cougars built a 10-4 lead and stayed ahead most of the third set, sparked by a Maggie Finnegan ace. O'Brien's block made it 13-5, while Emily Killam spiked an overpass for a 19-12 lead.
It was enough, as Harlan charged back within 23-22. But a kill by Shea Rainosek set up Addison Goertz's clinching ace for the match lead.
Neither team was willing to give in for much of set four, which was tied eight times including 16-16. Harlan took a 13-10 lead midway through after kills by Thalia Yancey and Da'Mya Mann, and a combined block.
Cinco Ranch responded, pulling ahead 17-16 on a block by Martinez and Rainosek. A stellar dig and a Martinez kill placed the Cougars two points from victory.
Loo put the finishing touch on the match, though it was initially not clear if the ball was touched before it sailed out of bounds. The point went to the Cougars, who did not mind the delayed celebration.
It was the second meeting between the teams this season, the other in a tournament match that Harlan swept.
"When I watched our game footage against Harlan we were playing a lot of different rotations with different players," Wells said. "Of course that was back in August so we've changed a lot of things since then. A lot more consistency has been happening with passing, setting, defense, everything. We just really found our chemistry as well throughout the season. We're playing really well and trusting each other, and I think that's a huge part of the game."
The Cougars were led in the semifinal by double-doubles from Martinez (16 kills, 12 digs) and Loo (14 kills, 10 digs), as well as 10 kills from Ari Willis.
O'Brien finished with 44 assists and 11 digs, while Killam added nine kills and two blocks. Finnegan led the Cougars with 19 digs.
Aniya Joseph led Harlan with 17 kills and 13 digs, while Mann finished with 17 assists, 12 digs and 11 kills. Both had three blocks.
"She's a great hitter," O'Brien said of Joseph. "We knew going into the game she was going to have big kills. But it was going to be a matter of how we were going to stop her and just do good on our side. Setting up a good block and being ready on defense because she's very shotty, she has a powerful arm, was a big thing."
Morgan Ritchie added eight kills, with Brooklyn Vigil's 15 digs and Isabelle De La Rosa's 26 assists also leading the team.

LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch, an outdoor shopping center located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, will see the opening of two new businesses by early 2024 following the reopening of Teal Poppy boutique in June.
Teal Poppy is local women owned and offers a selection of women’s clothing, handmade jewelry, bags and other accessories. LaCenterra is already home to a mix of retailers, restaurants and service tenants, such as Sephora, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and the Crack Shack.
Shoppers can expect Kilwins to join these retailers in the fall. Kilwins is a sweets shop with an open kitchen—selling candy, fudge, ice cream and other goodies. It will occupy a 1,014-square-foot space next to Starbucks.
Additionally, Nando’s restaurant is anticipated to open in early 2024. Located in a 2,754-square-foot space next to Jamba Juice, the restaurant specializes in South African peri-peri flame-grilled chicken. Peri peri, also known as African bird’s eye chili, is a spicy seasoning and natural preservative used in the Nando’s sauces.

Last week a Katy resident took a picture of a bobcat sitting in a tree in his backyard in Cinco Ranch Section 1. After sharing the image with his neighbors one of them sent the picture to Fort Bend County Constable Precinct 1 Chad Norvell, who shared it on social media.
“He didn’t stay long,” says Constable Norvell regarding the bobcat. “If you see bobcats or coyotes in your area, bear in mind that both can easily jump a 6-foot fence so keep an eye on small pets.”
According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas bobcats can weigh between 15 and 30 pounds. They are opportunistic hunters that mostly will hunt small mammals like rabbits and rats. They can pose a threat to small pets.
Cinco Ranch resident John Bostic sent the picture into the Constable’s office as a way to alert fellow neighbors and to show everyone some of the wildlife that lives among us in the Katy area.
“My next door neighbor photographed the bobat on the evening of February 8 in his backyard, which is adjacent to a greenbelt/park located in Cinco Ranch 1,” says Bostic.
Bobcats, coyotes, wild hogs, rabbits, racoons, foxes, alligators, and snakes are just some of the more frequent wildlife that Katy residents can encounter. Extreme weather such as the cold, heat, or an abundance of rain can cause them to move around more and increase encounters with Katy residents.
“Our native wildlife lives among us and isn’t cause for alarm,” says Constable Norvell. “Leave them alone and they’ll leave you alone.”
The first of the year and into the spring is when some Katy residents will encounter baby animals such as rabbits. While cute to see, they should be left alone.
Each year, rabbits deliver litters of bunnies. Their nests are often found in backyards and care should be taken when mowing or raking to avoid injuring baby wild rabbits. If found, these rabbits should be left alone.
“Baby rabbits leave the nest when they're three weeks old and about the size of a chipmunk,” states the Humane Society’s website. “If you find a chipmunk-sized but fully-furred rabbit with eyes open, ears erect, and the ability to hop, they are meant to be on their own. As small and helpless as they may look, they are not an orphan and don't need your help.”
Wild rabbits that are truly orphaned are extremely difficult to wean and care for. If they survive, the Humane Society recommends turning them over to a vet or rehabilitation group to be released.
The best practice when encountering local wildlife, especially if they are stressed from inclement weather is to leave them alone. It's also important to educate and teach children how to stay safe around wildlife.
In most cases, displaced wildlife are more afraid of us than we are them. Take caution and if you need assistance call your local animal control or a professional.

Businesses are moving in at LaCenterra, with area foodies, exercise aficionados and dog lovers soon having the opportunity to enjoy the new tenants moving it.
Five new businesses — including three eateries, an exercise facility and dog spa — are expected to open through to this summer at LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch beginning this month.
“We are delighted to start the year with incredible leasing momentum and welcome five new tenants to LaCenterra,” Norma Garza, general manager at LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch said in a news release. “The year is off to a great start and we’re excited for what’s to come. These tenants will be great additions to our center and will be enjoyed by many in our community.”

First up is CAVA, a Mediterranean-themed restaurant. The 2,502-square-foot eatery is opening this month across from Trader Joe’s. The chain boasts more than 120 locations nationwide. The LaCenterra location is the second in the greater Houston region following one in The Woodlands. More locations are planned in the Heights and Kingwood. Up next is Postino, a wine and food bar, scheduled to open in April. The 4,090-squre-foot space will be located next to Kendra Scott in front of Heritage Square. PUCCI Café is a high-end pet accessories boutique as well as a collection of dog spa products free of genetically modified organisms and harsh chemicals. Pure Barre is expected to open in May. Pure Barre provides exercise classes that primarily focus on low-impact, high-intensity movements.
