Chicken wings are the food of choice for sports bars all across the country and Austin is no different. A fast-growing wing chain is now setting the opening date for its farthest south Austin restaurant yet.
The Pluckers at Southpark Meadows will open on February 17. The new space marks the Austin-based restaurant's 32nd eatery and first Pluckers for the Capital City area in seven years.
The Southpark Meadows Pluckers will also bridge a gap between the company's current South Austin location on South Lamar and its furthest South San Marcos restaurant to serve Austinites and visitors entering or leaving the state's capital city near I-35.
"We’ve always had a special place in our hearts for Austin, where it all began for us, and we’re thrilled to be returning to the area," Dave Paul, Pluckers co-owner and co-founder, said in a news release. "South Austin has experienced tremendous growth, and we wanted to be part of that expansion while also staying true to our roots. This new Southpark Meadows location will give us the chance to serve our delicious wings and create lasting memories for our friends living between South Lamar and San Marcos."
Southpark Meadows is the furthest South Austin shopping center located right off the access road of I-35 South. The new Pluckers joins several other popular eateries within the massive strip including Texas Roadhouse, Chili's, Longhorn Steakhouse and more.
With Pluckers' 30th anniversary approaching in July, this store opening represents a significant milestone for the restaurant, which was originally founded in Austin.
Paul, Mark Greenberg and Sean Greenberg started Pluckers in 1995 as University of Texas at Austin students who craved late-night wings and food. They began the restaurant offering delivery services and it quickly became a hit.
Pluckers now has over 30 restaurants across the state, serving wings, burgers, specialty drinks and more. The chain is also known as a popular game day destination for sports-lovers as big-screen TV's play live streams of games and competitors can participate in weekly trivia nights.

An EF1 tornado with 90-mph winds tore through an area southwest of Houston, causing structural damage to some homes, a storm survey team from the National Weather Service confirmed Friday night.
According to preliminary reporting by weather service storm survey teams, as many as five tornadoes were produced Thursday afternoon: two EF1s and three EF0s on the Enhanced Fujita wind scale. EF1 tornadoes spin at 86 to 110 mph, while the weakest tornadoes at EF0 still spin at 65 to 85 mph.
El Campo tornado: The EF1 tornado, which had an estimated peak wind speed of 95 mph, began at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, lasted five minutes, traveled about half a mile and cut a path about 50 yards wide 3 miles east-northeast of El Campo in Wharton County. Survey teams "found total destruction of a well constructed outbuilding (barn) that resulted with the EF1 rating," the weather service said.
Southwest Harris tornado: The EF1 tornado, which had estimated maximum winds of 90 mph, began at 3:30 p.m., lasted about a minute, traveled only 0.05 mile and cut a path 25 yards wide about a mile north-northwest of Meadows Place in Harris County. Survey teams "found a very brief tornado that resulted in damage to a couple of residential homes that resulted in the EF-1 rating," the weather service said.
Northern Liberty tornado: The EF0 tornado, which had a peak wind speed of 76 mph, began at 3:42 p.m., lasted about 13 minutes and traveled 6.87 miles about 9 to 10 miles northwest of Dayton Lakes in Liberty County. Survey teams "found tree damage and damage to manufactured homes correlating to EF-0 damage."
Lake Houston/Huffman tornado: The EF0 tornado, which had maximum winds of 60 mph, began at 3:51 p.m., lasted three minutes and traveled 2.11 miles about 4 to 6 miles east-southeast of Kingswood in Harris County. Survey teams "could not find any damage associated with this tornado," the weather service said. "However, information from social media imagery and spotter reports helped determine location and timing.'
Dayton tornado: The EF0 tornado had wind speeds of up to 60 mph, began at 4:04 p.m., lasted five minutes and traveled 1.11 miles about 7 miles west of Dayton in Liberty County. Survey teams here also could not find any damage associated with the tornado but pulled information from social media images and spotter reports.
Multiple sightings of tornadoes across Southeast Texas on Thursday had prompted the National Weather Service to send survey teams on Friday to study damage on the ground and pore over video footage to confirm not only the power and paths of the tornadoes but also whether they were true tornadoes at all.
The most definitive and documented tornado sighting on Thursday was a twister spotted in Wharton County, southwest of Houston, around 2:25 p.m. Thursday. The weather service had received multiple reports on the ground and social media videos of a tornado touching down near El Campo, where Doppler radar also indicated areas of rotation within a storm supercell, forecasters said.

Later that afternoon, the weather service also received a report at 3:57 p.m. of a funnel cloud or a possible tornado about 6 miles east-northeast of Atascocita, east of Kingswood, in Harris County.
Weather service meteorologist Brian Kyle on Friday said that the agency was looking into a total of five tornado sightings and the one reported funnel cloud, based on video and spotter reports from Thursday. Kyle suggested that the final tally of twisters may change as the weather service survey teams start verifying the reports firsthand.
According to the weather service, the five reported tornadoes were spotted:
“Storm surveys will be conducted today to find out more details on yesterday’s tornadoes,” the weather service said in a statement Friday morning. “One survey will be conducted in the southwest Houston and El Campo areas and another survey will be in the Liberty County area.”
SEVERE WEATHER: No injuries reported in lightning strike on Tomball residence Thursday, authorities say.
Survey findings will be issued when they are finished later Friday, the agency said.
The weather service survey teams routinely investigate tornado sightings by documenting any damage on the ground, comparing it to data gathered by Doppler radar and other instruments, and reviewing any video footage or photography of the event.

HOUSTON – A swath of severe weather spawned multiple tornadoes in southeastern Texas on Thursday, part of a multi-day severe weather threat sweeping across the South through the end of the week.
Five tornadoes were confirmed around the Houston region. Emergency managers in Texas' Wharton County southwest of Houston reported three tornadoes during the afternoon as a line of severe storms rolled across the Lone Star State.
"There are no reports of severe damage or injuries yet, but we’ll be assessing the situation over the next few hours," Srubar told FOX Weather soon after the twisters struck.
An EF-1 tornado touched down just outside El Campo, Texas, causing some damage to barns.
A man working on a forklift in Wharton County at the time said he got an up-close look at one of the twisters.
"It does make you feel kind of small, though," the man told FOX 26 Houston. "You know, that's kind of a big deal just to be that close to something that powerful."
HOW ARE TORNADOES RATED? THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE EXPLAINED
Closer to Houston, a spotter reported some damage near Meadows Place on the southwest side of the Houston metro due to a brief tornado, according to the National Weather Service office in Houston.
To the northeast of the city, the NWS reported a waterspout over Lake Houston moved onto land near Huffman. Minutes later the NWS took another report of a tornado sighting to the northwest of Dayton.
In all, three tornadoes were rated EF-0 and the other two rated an EF-1, according to NWS Housston.
At least three reports of tornadoes were filed in Louisiana as the storms from Texas rolled across the South. Two of the reports were near the town of Hineston and the other was near Pitkin. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
A minor severe weather threat lingers for portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida before a more significant threat develops Saturday.
Parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama are in a Level 3 out of 5 severe weather threat, according to the SPC.
While details about the budding threat are still being sorted out, the SPC warned that strong tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds are all on the table for Saturday. Residents are being asked to closely monitor the forecast.
