HOUSTON – As Houston gears up for the 2027 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the organization is also preparing to break ground on a major project expected to shape the future of the Rodeo for years to come.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 17 for its new agricultural complex along Highway 288, a more than 1 million-square-foot facility that represents the largest single facilities investment in the organization’s history.

The event will also include the official naming of the new complex, the release of updated renderings and remarks from Rodeo leadership and other distinguished guests.
The 2027 Rodeo is scheduled for March 2-21, 2027.
The new facility is part of a multiyear project designed to expand the Rodeo’s agriculture, education and youth programming.
During the annual Rodeo, the complex is expected to host horse show competitions, some livestock shows, junior and open breeding shows, archery competitions, agricultural mechanics, commercial auctions and educational contests, including 4-H and intercollegiate programming.
Some livestock events will continue to be held at Reliant Center.
The new complex is being designed with exhibitors and families in mind, with climate-controlled facilities, expanded gathering areas and changes intended to reduce travel distances and wait times during move-in and move-out.
Construction is expected to span several years, with the Rodeo aiming to welcome guests to the new complex in time for the 2029 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The project is also part of the organization’s long-term plans leading up to its centennial in 2032.
Rodeo officials say the complex will not replace Reliant Park. Instead, it is intended to complement the existing facilities while providing additional space for agriculture, education, youth and Western heritage programming.
The new property will also be used outside of Rodeo season for educational programs, committee meetings, fundraisers, auctions, galas and other year-round events.
Rodeo officials have pointed to the age of Reliant Arena, as well as parking congestion and the need to improve the experience for livestock and horse exhibitors, as factors behind the project.
The organization says the new complex will allow it to expand its year-round mission and create additional opportunities for Texas youth and agricultural education.
The Rodeo has also emphasized that the project is being built on its own property along Highway 288 and is intended to strengthen its long-term presence in Houston.
The Sept. 17 groundbreaking will mark the next major step in bringing that vision to life.
And for Rodeo fans, the countdown to 2027 is already underway.

The unique East Coast steak restaurant that hit Texas two years ago is now fully removing itself from the Lone Star State. Medium Rare, which announced Sept. 3 that it was permanently closing its Houston location, turned around less than a week later and declared the end of its Dallas storefront.
"After two incredible years in Dallas, we're sorry to share that this Sunday night will be our final service," read the message posted Wednesday to Instagram. "To our Dallas community, thank you for welcoming us, sharing so many meals with us, and making Medium Rare part of your special moments."
It was just two years ago that the small East Coast chain of Medium Rare came to Texas. The Washington, D.C.-based restaurant launched in Dallas-at 5631 Alta Ave. in the Lower Greenville section of the city-in May 2024. About six months later the Houston location opened (the Houston location closed Sept. 6).

Medium Rare, which also has locations in Arlington, Va.; Bethesda, Md.; Columbia, Md.; New York; Philadelphia; and Watertown, Mass., is a unique concept as it offers just one dinner item: a prix fixe meal starting with bread, then a green salad, and finishing off with steak frites. You get culotte steak sliced thin, presented with a batch of fries and the restaurant's "secret sauce." (The culotte is a cut of beef from the top sirloin, also known as the sirloin cap or the picanha. It features a generous layer of fat that renders down when cooking, contributing to the cut's moist and beefy flavor.)
The restaurant also does brunch, but again, offers a prix fixe, though there are a few more customizable options including eggs benedict, French toast and sausage, and of course, steak and eggs. So, essentially, Medium Rare cuts through indecision and angles to be the restaurant you visit when you know you want steak.
Of course, both Dallas and Houston have their fair share of steakhouses and a deeply rooted culture of cattle ranching and beef eating. This may make it difficult for an out-of-state brand-and particularly with such a tight concept-to succeed initially, but as of this moment Medium Rare has not given a reason for its Texas exit. The brand has yet to respond to Chron's request for comment.
Instead, as of right now, Medium Rare's last word in Texas, and in Dallas, is the same last word it gave in its Houston announcement: "It's not goodbye. It's goodbye for now."

HOUSTON – After beginning the 2026 season with a pair of road games, the HCU football team is set to host its home-opener at Husky Stadium this Saturday with a visit from the Arkansas Baptist Buffaloes at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's game is a "Blue Out: Presented by Salata" with the first 100 fans through the gates receiving a free t-shirt.
The Huskies (1-1) host the Buffaloes (0-2) for the first of five games on campus this fall in the third-ever meeting between the two programs. Last season, HCU began the season with a 69-0 victory that saw the Huskies rush for 401 yards with eight rushing touchdowns.
Last weekend, after opening the season with a road win over 19th-ranked Southeastern, HCU dropped a 31-3 matchup across town to the Rice Owls. Through two games, the Huskies' defense ranks third nationally with just 89 passing yards allowed per game. Individually, Jayven Anderson, Javon Bejarano and Trent Zappe are all tied for second in the Southland Conference with 18 tackles.
Running back Champ Dozier ran for 86 yards on eight carries against the Owls last weekend and totaled 127 all-purpose yards with a pair of kickoff returns for 41 yards. The HCU offense has turned the ball over just twice this season while the defense has three takeaways.
HCU is also tied for least penalized team in the SLC so far this year, averaging just 4.5 penalties per game. The Huskies' 42.5 penalty yards per game is the lowest in the conference.
Arkansas Baptist earned a 30-19 win on the road over Texas College in Tyler, Texas last weekend after falling to Pikeville, 51-7, to open the season. Quarterback Charles Coney completed 14-of-23 pass attempts in the win over Texas College, tossing a pair of touchdowns to receiver Cameron Marshall. Darryl Searcy Jr. rushed for 73 yards and a score, as well.
