What is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a condition that happens when your nerves get damaged. Nerves are like wires that carry messages between your brain and other parts of your body. When they’re damaged, it can cause different problems like tingling, numbness, or pain, especially in your hands and feet. Some people describe the feeling as burning, sharp, or like pins and needles.
Symptoms
- Numbness and tingling in the feel and legs
- Burning sensation
- Pain
- Bloating
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Heartburn
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizzy/Fainting spells
- Double vision
- Bell’s Palsy (paralysis of one side of the face)
Types of Neuropathy
- Diabetic Neuropathy
- Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy
- Post-Surgical Neuropathy
- Idiopathic Neuropathy
Causes
Neuropathy can be caused by conditions or events that damage the nerves. Diabetes is a common cause due to high blood sugar levels harming nerves over time. Other causes include infections (like shingles or HIV), injuries, autoimmune diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis), and vitamin deficiencies, especially low vitamin B12. Chronic alcohol use, certain medications (like chemotherapy), and exposure to toxins can also damage nerves. Identifying and treating the underlying cause is essential to prevent further damage and manage symptoms.
