Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy
The drugs and chemotherapy treatments used to treat cancer can cause peripheral neuropathy, known as Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN). Some drugs are more susceptible to driving the development of neuropathy. The risk of developing CIPN can increase with more treatments and the prolonged use of the medications.
Symptoms
- Symptoms of CIPN may include:
- The feeling of "pins & needles" and tingling in extremities
- Pain and burning
- Loss of sensation
- Muscle weakness
- Sensitivity to temperature
- These symptoms can begin as soon as a few hours or days after a chemotherapy session. However, they generally occur several weeks or months after treatment. These symptoms can come and go or remain consistent, and they can begin to progress as treatment continues.
