Renowned angler Art Weston has done it again — recently landing a massive alligator gar measuring 7 feet 3 inches and weighing 153 pounds on Lake Livingston in East Texas.
Calling it the “most challenging catch of my life,” Weston spent nearly four hours reeling in the fish.
With the help of Captain Kirk Kirkland, owner of Alligator Gar Fishing, the pair chased the fish for two miles and nearly lost it several times before finally bringing it in. Weston and Kirkland said they released the gar after the catch.
“A true 1% likelihood catch,” Weston wrote in a Facebook post.
The Kentucky-based professional angler has broken more than 80 records. In 2023, he set a world record with a 283-pound alligator gar caught at Sam Rayburn Reservoir in East Texas, according to the International Game Fish Association.
The following year, he returned in hopes of landing an even larger gar — 293 pounds or more. While he didn’t break the record, he did catch a 200-plus-pound alligator snapping turtle with Kirkland’s help, followed by an 188-pound alligator gar the next day.
Weston’s April 8 catch is believed to be the heaviest “multiple-to-one” catch ever recorded — a term used in sport fishing to describe the ratio between the fish’s weight and the strength of the fishing line used to reel it in.
In this case, Weston used a 2-pound test line to land a 153-pound alligator gar, meaning the fish weighed more than 75 times the strength of the line. That ratio makes the catch particularly remarkable, as it highlights not just the size of the fish, but also the extreme challenge involved in reeling it in with such lightweight equipment.
He’s also awaiting confirmation on another potential record this year — the largest spotted bass caught on a 2-pound test line. The fish, weighing 2 pounds and 8 ounces, was landed at Toledo Bend Reservoir and is currently pending certification.

LIVINGSTON, Texas — "Sharing what was my most challenging catch of my life," Art Weston wrote on Facebook after landing a massive alligator gar in Lake Livingston.
The 7-foot-3-inch behemoth weighed in at 153 pounds and Weston said it took him nearly four hours to reel in on just 2-pound test fishing line. He said they chased the fish 2 miles before hauling it in.
Weston said he caught the fish with the help of Captain Kirk Kirkland, the owner of Alligator Gar Fishing, a guide service. They said they almost lost the fish multiple times before bringing it in. Kirkland and Weston said they released the fish after catching it.
"A true 1% likelihood catch," Weston said.
Weston claimed the massive alligator gar was the largest fresh-water fish caught on an ultra-light tackle in International Game Fish Association history. He said it was the sixth largest if you include salt-water species.

Texas has witnessed the return of a world-record fishing titan, who crafted another extraordinary saga beneath its murky surface in the most challenging catch of his life.
Kentucky angler Art Weston snagged another gigantic alligator gar while traveling with his fishing guide, Captain Kirk Kirkland, aboard his boat, which he rightfully named the “Garship Enterprise.”
Weston etched his name into the record books again on April 8 after landing the largest freshwater fish on ultra-light tackle in the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) history. It’s just another notch to his belt of more than 40 world records.
He battled the 153-pound, 7-foot-3-inch behemoth for nearly four grueling hours before finally bringing it to shore after chasing it for over 2 miles.
Weston said his goal for the day was to best the existing 110-pound record for alligator gar caught on an incredibly light, 2-pound test line.
Knowing the difficulty of landing such a large fish on such fragile tackle, Weston and Kirkland came prepared with 6-foot steel leaders and sturdy J-hooks, adhering to IGFA regulations.
The reel drag was set feather-light, relying more on the fish tiring itself out than brute force.
“This is a situation where you can’t rely on the force you can apply to the fish, but more so, just put enough pressure on them to keep swimming and tire themselves out,” Weston said.
When the massive gar struck, Weston said its initial roll didn’t immediately reveal its record-breaking size, so the decision was made to pursue the catch.
The stubborn fish stayed deep, often swimming 8-12 feet below their boat, even resting on the bottom for 10-plus minutes at a time.
“Huge thanks to Kirk, as it was such a hard catch – we worked so hard to land her (almost lost her multiple times),” Weston said. “A true 1% likelihood catch.”
Once safely ashore, the giant gar was quickly weighed, measured, and photographed before being released back into Lake Livingston alive, according to Weston.
According to the IGFA, once officially certified, this incredible catch will be the largest freshwater fish ever recorded worldwide on an ultra-light (2-pound test) line.
It will also rank as the sixth-largest fish of any species, freshwater or saltwater, caught on such light tackle.

While fishing Lake Livingston in East Texas with his longtime guide, the legendary Captain Kirk Kirkland, aboard the fittingly dubbed "Garship Enterprise," Weston hauled in what will soon be certified as the largest freshwater fish in the world ever caught on ultra-light tackle (6th largest if you count saltwater species), adding to the dozens of world-record fish already under his belt.
The duo initially set out to land an alligator gar weighing more than 110 pounds on a 2-pound test line, according to Sports Illustrated. Weston ended up shattering that goal, landing a 153-pound monster that measured 7 feet and 3 inches long. Once certified, the gar will set a new International Game Fish Association (IGFA) world record. The catch would also mark Weston's 81st world record.
The catch was no easy feat. In an April 9 Facebook post, Weston said the "true 1% likelihood catch" was the most challenging of his life, as a four-hour battle with the prehistoric fish ensued that covered over two miles of the lake. "This particular fish was very difficult, swimming 8 to 12 feet below the boat, and even resting on the bottom for 10 or more minutes at a time," Weston told Sports Illustrated, adding the gar would not cooperate by coming to the surface for air next to the boat. "Eventually, as she tired, she came up more frequently and Kirk was finally able to grab the steel leader and begin to control the fish."
After several attempts, and the line becoming increasingly twisted, the two were finally able to secure a rope around the fish and bring it aboard. After bringing the gar to shore, they weighed it, and got its measurements and photos, before releasing it back into the water alive. "Huge thanks to Kirk, as it was such a hard catch—we worked so hard to land her (almost lost her multiple times)," Weston wrote.
On April 6, the IGFA announced Weston holds every available Men's Line Class World Record for alligator gar. They include a 212-pound alligator gar he caught on a 16-pound line while fishing Choke Canyon in Texas on Sept. 19, 2024. He also holds the current all-tackle world record for an alligator gar at 283 pounds, which he caught on Lake Sam Rayburn on Sept. 2, 2023.

Art Weston, a Kentucky resident, went to Lake Livingston, Texas, to catch an alligator gar with the help of an expert guide and fisherman, Captain Kirk Kirkland.
"It was an epic battle, lasting nearly 4 hours, and covering over 2 miles of lake," Weston told Fox News Digital.

Alligator gars are a unique species of fish.
They're often referred to as "living fossils"; records for the creatures have been discovered dating back almost 100 million years, as Fox News Digital previously reported.
Weston said the fish was swimming 8-12 feet below the boat and kept resting on the bottom for 10 minutes at a time — making the catch difficult.

"Kirk and I have practiced light line before, so we were prepared with 6-foot steel leaders, the max length allowed, and a sturdy j-hook," said Weston.
"The drag on the reel was set very low to allow the fish to take the line out of the reel without breaking it."

"This is a situation where you can’t rely on the force you can apply to the fish, but [rather], just put enough pressure on them to keep swimming and tire themselves out," said Weston.
He said that in such a situation, multiple things can go wrong — such as lines getting twisted, obstacles snagging the line and the fish spitting out the bait.
